New CESIS book on Innovation and Growth

CESIS researchers Börje Johansson, Charile Karlsson and Hans Lööf, together with former CESIS research coordinator Martin Andersson, publish a new edited volume on Oxford University Press. The book is a major attempt to summarise the state of the art in the field of research in which CESIS is specialised: firms' R&D and innovation strategies and their economy-wide consequences.

Contributors include Zoltan Acs, Paul Almeida, Cristiano Antonelli, Rene Belderbos, John Cantwell, Alfred Kleinknecht, Jacques Mairesse and Bart Verspagen.

CESIS researchers involved in new research project on local innovation networks!

The Center for Entrepreneurship and Spatial Economics (CEnSE) at Jönköping International Business School has received funding from the European Regional Development Fund for research on local innovation processes and networks in Jönköping Region. The project will focus on the importance of firm-level linkages and collaborations in local innovation processes. The Jönköping Region is particularly interesting in this context since it hosts a business sector renowned for its strong entrepreneurial spirit and its large fraction of small and medium sized firms. This research is of great interest to CESIS’ current research on innovation networks and Sara Johansson, CESIS researcher, will be largely involved in the project. The project will start next year and proceed during three years.

New evidence on the effects of entrepreneurship

Recent research on the effects of entrepreneurship on industry-wide productivity demonstrates a delayed entry effect. New entrants into an industry leads to an immediate negative influence on the productivity of existing firms, but several years after the initial entry, entry has positive productivity effects. The paper reporting these new findings, co-authored by CESIS researchers Pontus Braunerhjelm and Per Thulin and CIRCLE's Martin Andersson has quickly received much attention; it was ranked number 1 in Sweden and number 14 globally by September downloads.

Which educations yield positive returns?

CESIS chairman Björn Hårsman and PhD student Zara Dagbashyan has studied the private returns to higher education, carefully differentiating between a large number of different educations. They find that a number of advanced educations have negative expected returns for the student, raising the question of how such expectations affect the competence pool of Swedish regions. The report, which has been commissioned by Stockholm Academic Forum, is available here.

Gustav Martinsson enrolled for committee on corporate taxation

CESIS researcher Gustav Martinsson has been engaged as expert for the committee on corporate taxation lead by HG Wessberg. The committee is the most ambitious review initiated by the current government, active until November 1st 2013. Martinsson's expertise on finance and innovation will contribute to the statement that the committee is to deliver to Minister of Finance Anders Borg no later than October 1st 2012

Gustav Martinsson awarded Wallander scholarship

CESIS relocates within KTH

As of July 1st, the Stockholm-wing of CESIS (the Division of Economics, KTH) will relocate from its current organisational status as part of the School of Architecture and the Built Environment (ABE) to the School of Industrial Engineering and Management (ITM). Through this move, CESIS will be aligned to the department of Industrial Economy and Management (Indek).

CESIS researcher Pontus Braunerhjelm had three papers among the most downloaded on SSRN in 2010, subtopics "Knowledge spillovers" and "Other Entrepreneurs".

The papers "Growth and Entrepreneurship: An Empirical Assessment", "The Inventor's Role: Was Schumpeter Right?" and "The Knowledge Filter, Entrepreneurship, and Economic Growth" have all been published in international journal and previously appeared as CESIS Working Papers.

Åstebro new CESIS associate

Nobel laureate Peter Diamond at KTH

Invited by KTH at the initiative of CESIS-researcher professor Pontus Braunerhjelm, Nobel laureate Peter Diamond gave a lecture on the background of the research that was awarded with the prestigous price. Professor Diamond also took the opportunity to give advice to and encourage young researchers and students of economics to pursue research.

Thesis defence: Knowledge, Product Differentiation and Trade

Sara Johansson, CESIS affiliated researcher, successfully defended here thesis "Knowledge, Product Differentiation and Trade" on March 26. The thesis analyzes the influence of knowledge on the export performance of firms in different regions. It focuses on the relationship between knowledge and the structure of regional export flows in terms of horizontal and vertical product differentiation and the geographic distribution of export flows. Faculty opponent was professor Volker Nitsch, Technische Universität Darmstadt.
