Universities in regional innovation systems
The project, which started in 2009 and is finalised in early 2011, studies the impact of universities in regional economies. Based on a review of earlier research in the area, four main channels of direct impact have been identified:
1. Through their own regional spending, and through the spending of staff and students, universities create local income streams and jobs.
2. Universities continually make fresh graduates available for local firms
3. Universities strengthen local entrepreneurship dynamics
4. Universities are important nodes in regional knowledge-intensive networks
For each of these channels, the project has analysed the current impact made by universities in the Stockholm-Mälar region. Furthermore, the project has analysed the relative resource efficiency of universities. Findings are reported in separate CESIS working papers and summarised in a comprehensive report which is expected early 2011.
The project has been funded by Vinnova, the Stockholm County Council, the Uppsala regional council and the Stockholm Academic Forum.
